With sales of $1.5 billion in fiscal 1999, the Sports Authority is the largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the United States. Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Company operates 199 stores in 32 states. Mega Sports Co., Inc. operates another 19 stores in Japan under a license agreement with the Company. Over 12,000 employees are dedicated to serve the needs of consumers participating and/or interested in almost any type of sport, leisure or recreational activity. Stores feature a broad assortment of quality name brand merchandise in athletic footwear, apparel and sporting equipment at prices that are competitive in the market at the time.
The Sports Authority opened its first store in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1987. In 1990, the Company was acquired by Kmart Corporation. Following public offerings in November 1994 and October 1995, Kmart no longer owns any interest in the Company. The Company's stock is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the trading symbol TSA.
Since November of 1999, customers also have had the opportunity to shop 24 hours 7 days a week at the retail e-commerce site www.TheSportsAuthority.com operated by TheSportsAuthority.com, Inc., a joint venture between the Company and Global Sports Interactive, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Global Sports, Inc.
