Carfax started with a vision - to create a one-stop source of vehicle history information for buyers and sellers of used cars. Working closely with the Missouri Automobile Dealer's Association (MADA), Carfax offered the first Carfax Vehicle History Report to the dealer market in 1986. These first reports were developed with a database of 10,000 vehicle records. By the end of 1993, the Carfax database contained title information from nearly all 50 states and we were ready to begin offering the service nationally.
Over the years, we enhanced our system to assemble and retrieve data from multiple sources using the 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN), found on the dashboard and title document of every vehicle in the United States. Using the VIN, Carfax can generate a detailed history report or "background check" on virtually any used car or truck in seconds. Nearly one in every ten used cars has a hidden problem.
Today, the Carfax database contains over 1.4 billion records compiled from over 170 separate sources including motor vehicle departments in the US and Canada, emissions inspection stations, auto auctions, fire and police departments and insurance companies.
Our Vehicle History Reports reveal background information and unearth "hidden problems" in a car's past that may affect its resale value and safety. Our reports may reveal the following:
Totaled in an accident/Salvaged
Flood damage
Odometer rollbacks Lemon histories
Junked Titles
State emissions inspection results
Lien activity, and/or
Vehicle use (taxi, rental, lease, etc.)
Our team of data experts is aggressively pursuing the acquisition of additional data sources to maintain our position as the nation's leading provider of comprehensive vehicle history information.
