Plow & Hearth Story Plow & Hearth is a national catalog, retail, and internet company specializing in "Products for Country Living." We make our HOME in beautiful Madison, Virginia, whose rural beauty and traditional values serve to remind us constantly of the "spirit of country living". The original Plow & Hearth catalog continues to specialize in unique, high-quality products for country living, the HOME catalog features HOME furnishings and decorative accents and find practical solutions for everyday living in the Problem Solvers catalog. Our company also has retail stores and catalog outlets.
We began in 1980 with a small retail store and produced our first catalog in 1981. From the beginning, country living and its values have guided Plow & Hearth. Our first color catalog cover (the interior was still black and white) depicted the beauty of a Blue Ridge morning as the last bit of fog burns off. Customers who ordered from that catalog had their orders filled from the old granary on founders Peter and Peggy Rice's farm.
Since then, we've grown tremendously. We received a spot on INC. magazine's list of the 500 fastest growing companies in America for four consecutive years (from 1986 to 1989). In 2004 alone, we mailed more than 63 million catalogs and sales exceeded $100 million. We are now a leader in the catalog industry and the premier source of products for country living.
A lot has changed over the years, but our belief in the values of country living is as strong as ever. At Plow & Hearth we use the values and the spirit of country living to guide our business. We believe in treating our customers like neighbors and friends. We offer only products we use or would use ourselves; we offer them at fair prices; and we guarantee them without condition. Plow & Hearth Products
The products we offer reflect and embody the spirit and values of country living. They are functional, unique, and of high quality. They are good values. They remind us all of the simple pleasures of life.
The products for our Plow & Hearth Products for Country Living catalog focus on essentials for HOME, hearth, yard, and garden. Specific product categories include hearth and fireplace accessories, indoor furniture and furnishings, functional clothing and footwear, outdoor furniture, Lawn and garden tools and products, decorative Lawn and garden accessories, and bird and nature-related products.
Our HOME catalog offers casual, comfortable HOME furnishings and accessories. The catalog is based on the same qualities as our original catalog - durable, functional items including chairs, tables, rugs, sofas, and decorative accessories.
Plow & Hearth's Position in the Industry Plow & Hearth has earned a reputation for quality products and exceptional customer service. Not only has our internal Quality Improvement Process (QIP) received national recognition within the catalog industry, but in 1995 we were the recipient of the prestigious United States Senate Productivity and Quality Award (USSPQA) in Virginia.
In 1999, Plow & Hearth received the Quality Award for Continuing Excellence VSSPQA. Plow & Hearth is only one of 11 companies to receive this honor in the award's 19 year history.
Our environmentally conscious approach to business reflects our dedication to the values of country living. We have earned much recognition for our model recycling and environmental programs. One program, the "Two for One Program" has become a standard for the catalog industry. In this program Plow & Hearth, working with the Virginia Forestry Department, plants two seedlings for every tree used in the production of our catalog. This program has been responsible for the reforestation of more than 100 acres of land in Virginia.
Our founder and president Peter Rice has a proactive approach to the retail, catalog, and interactive business, which has established him as a leader within the industry. In 1994, Peter was selected as the Virginia Retailer of the Year by the Virginia Retail Merchants Association. Peter is a member of the catalog advisory committee of the Direct Marketing Association. He is a past director of the New England Mail Order Association and a past member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Virginia. Peter also serves on the Board of Directors for The Montpelier Foundation and the Piedmont Environmental Council. Plow & Hearth History
It's 1980. Fuel prices and interest rates are astronomical. Baby Boomers are growing up. Interest is high in alternative energy and lifestyles based on self-reliance, family, and recreation. This is the setting as we open our first retail store selling "Essentials for Country Living." Located in the shadow of Shenandoah National Park, our earth-bermed, passive-solar building has a wood stove for backup heat. Best selling items are wood stoves, rototillers, canning equipment, bulk garden seeds, books, and garden tools.
The years have changed our look and product mix, but the constant remains our dedication to selling only the best products for country living, and providing the best customer service you can find anywhere. At Plow & Hearth we use the values and the spirit of country living to guide our business. We believe in treating our customers like neighbors and friends. We offer only products we use or would use ourselves, we offer them at fair prices, and we guarantee them without condition.
1980
This is the year it all begins. Peter and Peggy Rice and Michael Burns found Plow & Hearth as a small retail store located on Route 29 in Madison, Virginia. The store, "a center for self-sufficient living," uses an unusual solar design to supplement one wood stove as the primary heat source.
Original merchandise includes wood stoves, chain saws, rototillers, country kitchen items, food preparation and preservation equipment, bird watching items, Lawn and garden tools and accessories, and a library of back-to-basics "how-to" books.
1998 Plow & Hearth launches its first Web site with secure ordering and commerce capabilities
Plow & Hearth shareholders sell a majority interest in the company to 1-800-FLOWERS.COM (NASDAQ: FLWS).
