F Foliage
The leaves and stem of the flower should be deep green in color without any brown edges.
R Ripeness
Blooms that are ripe hold their correct shape or form for each particular type of flower. Upon receiving your flowers, the buds should be closed, but slightly cracked open, meaning that they are just about to bloom within two days. The flowers will then have an extended vase life to enjoy.
E Elasticity
Fresh flowers possess a generous level of hydration, or water. The more hydrated a flower is, the fresher it is and the longer it will last. Gently push back the petals of the flower. If they slowly move back, the flower is well hydrated and fresh. If the flower is not fresh, the petals will not move back into place and will appear flaccid or wilted.

The stamen, the short stem or stems located inside the blossom of a flower, contains the flower's sex cells that help determine its maturity. To reproduce, the flower's stamen produces pollen and often a sticky substance (even after the flower is cut). Flowers that have produced pollen have matured. Look for flowers with closed buds that do not have visible pollen on or near its stamen to help ensure a "younger" flower.
