Levitz Furniture has long been an innovator and a pioneer. In fact, the company was the originator of the "warehouse store." Richard Levitz opened the first Levitz Furniture and home appliance store in Lebanon, PA in 1910. Early expansion came slowly, and two of Richard's sons opened a second location in Pottstown, PA in 1934. But by the early 1960s, Levitz began to truly change the way Americans buy furniture.
By that time, another of Richard's sons had opened a store in Tucson, AZ, only to be faced with a huge overstock of merchandise. Forced to sell an exceptional amount of furniture very quickly, the Levitz family did something revolutionary -- they advertised a giant "warehouse sale" where every piece of furniture would be sold at rock-bottom prices and customers could take their purchases home with them. Customers were amazed by the vast selection of merchandise, the low "warehouse prices" and the ability to simply walk out with brand new furniture.
A whole new concept in retailing was born. The Levitz family knew they were on to something big, so they began to expand. New stores in Allentown, PA and Phoenix, AZ took off and over the next several years, new Levitz warehouse showrooms began to pop up all across America. Coast-to-coast buying power and efficient national operations enabled Levitz to offer customers the best deals on high-quality name brand furniture. For more than a quarter-century, the company experienced unprecedented growth and leadership of a fast-growing industry -- a legacy that is shaping Levitz Furniture's vision for the future.
