Ritz Camera Centers Company History
The origin of Ritz Camera Centers dates back to 1918 when Benjamin Ritz began operating a portrait studio on the world famous boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ. The studio's success allowed Benjamin to open additional locations in New York and Philadelphia. In 1936, Benjamin and his younger brother Edward traveled to Washington, D.C. to open a film-processing lab. In the late 1930s, a customer could get quality black and white film developed, printed and delivered overnight for 25 cents a roll. The following year, the brothers expanded their business into Baltimore, Maryland and began offering a wide selection of cameras and accessories. Benjamin and Edward are credited with spreading the philosophy of "offering customers a quality product at a fair price." Their goal was to make customers feel at home when visiting any of the stores.
Today, Ritz Camera Centers is by far the leader in the photo-retailing industry with almost 1,200 locations in 48 states and the District of Columbia. From its beginnings, Ritz Camera Centers has always prided itself on the quality of photo-finishing it produces. They are unparalleled in giving customers the famous “Big Print,” a photograph full of color, contrast, clarity, and snap. At Ritz Camera, they understand the customer's needs and continuously strive to introduce new and exciting imaging alternatives such as “Pictures in Minutes” created at Big Print Central labs from film and digital media. Formed in the late 1970s, the Frequent Foto Club is designed to give members extra discounts, special deals, and loyalty reward points. The ultimate goal at Ritz is to help the customers preserve their memories and experiences for years to come.
Founded in 1988, Boater's World Marine Centers specializes in boating and marine supplies, and since then about 115 stores have been opened in over 25 states. What do boating and photography have in common? The answer is simple. David Ritz not only is the Chairman and CEO of Ritz Camera, but he is also an avid boater and photographer. Therefore, the combination is just right.
Both companies have been built on the strengths of the associates. There are now about 1,300 Ritz Camera and Boater’s World stores in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Their vast share of market makes the companies the largest photo retailer and the second largest marine product supply business in the country.
