Beginning in 1962 with one property in Southern California, Motel 6 is now the largest company-owned and operated lodging chain in the United States. Motel 6 began the concept of a nationwide economy chain -- where travelers can find consistent quality at the best price of any national, brand-name lodging company. The price of the original Motel 6 room was $6 as reflected in the brand name, emphasizing the low price concept.
In 1990, Motel 6 was acquired by an investor group led by ACCOR S.A., an international leader in travel, tourism and business services. Since August 1999, Motel 6 has been one of three proprietary brands operated under the Accor Economy Lodging (AEL) corporate umbrella. Accor formed AEL to focus on the operation and growth of its proprietary U.S. economy lodging brands. With Red Roof Inns and extended-stay brand, Studio 6, as part of its multi-brand portfolio, AEL is the largest owner and operator of lodging properties in the economy sector and the ninth-largest U.S. Hotel company overall.
