EBooks.com was founded in January 1997 by Stephen Cole, a lifetime bibliophile. The commercial launch of the site was successfully completed in September 2000.

EBooks.com has targeted an inventory of 120,000 books covering all categories, but initially are focusing on business books and general reference works. Subsequent categories will include computing and travel books, broadening the range to encompass all of the categories commonly found in retail and campus bookstores.
