The shamrock - or rather a green trefoil is universally recognized as a badge of the Irish. The Irish could care less that there is no one plant, unique to Ireland, which alone bears the name shamrock.
While Irish and everybody else who feels at least 1/16 Irish, prepare for the St. Patrick's day parades and celebrations are Scientists debating about the probabilities which clover native to the green island, lesser trefoil, white clover, black medick or red clover is the true Irish shamrock (translated: small clover).
Let them debate until next Friday when they realize what every commoner knew already: It does not matter. The Shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and badge of the Irish and not the official emblem of the Republic of Ireland. You can't find it on Irish coins, bank-notes or postage stamps. You can find it on clothes and costumes worn by the Irish people on St. Patrick's Day.
